Choosing a leather cover should begin with the notebook, paper or binding system you already use. Names such as A5, Personal, Junior or Classic can be helpful, but they do not always provide enough information to confirm fit.
Before ordering a cover for your 2027 planner or notebook, use the steps below to identify the correct format.
1. Start with the binding system
The binding system is just as important as the paper size.
Ring binders and Smart Ring systems
Check the paper dimensions, number of holes and ring configuration. A5, A6 and A7 paper can be used with different systems, including 6-hole, 9-hole and 26-hole formats, so covers are not necessarily interchangeable based on the paper-size name alone.
Discbound planners
Confirm the paper height and width, the number of discs and the size of the discs you plan to use. Pocket, Mini, A5, Junior or Half Letter, Classic, Letter and A4 discbound formats each require a cover designed around that specific layout.
Fixed notebooks
For notebooks such as Hobonichi, Midori and other bound books, check the exact brand and model as well as the closed dimensions. Two notebooks described as A5 may have the same paper footprint but different thicknesses or cover constructions.
Legal pads and notepads
Measure the pad itself and confirm whether it is top-bound or side-bound. US Letter paper, legal pads and 4 × 6 or 5 × 8 notepads each require a cover built for their particular proportions.
2. Check the actual paper size
A-series measurements are standardized:

A6 — 148 × 105 mm

A7 — 105 × 74 mm
These measurements describe the paper, not necessarily the finished notebook or planner. Rings, discs, covers, tabs and notebook thickness can all affect the space required inside a leather cover.
Names such as Personal, Pocket, Junior, Classic and Big may also vary by brand or binding system. Always compare the listed measurements rather than relying only on the format name.
3. Measure the notebook while it is closed
For the most accurate fit, measure in millimetres and record:

Total thickness
For a fixed notebook, also provide the brand and exact model. For a ring or discbound system, confirm the paper size and binding configuration.

4. Consider how you will use it
A smaller A7 or Pocket format is easy to carry for quick notes. A6 and Personal formats offer more writing space while remaining portable. A5 and Junior formats provide a balanced everyday workspace, while Classic, US Letter and A4 formats are better suited to larger planning systems or desk use.
The best size is not simply the largest or smallest option. It is the format that works naturally with the way you write, organize and carry your notebook.
