A beautiful exterior deserves an equally considered interior. At Layers of LeRoi, the leather inside a piece is not treated as a secondary surface. It is selected for the structure, reinforcement, and support it provides throughout daily use.
Conceria Walpier’s vegetable-tanned leather gives us the firmness and clarity required for that responsibility. Its dense body supports panels, pockets, folds, and layered construction while bringing natural warmth to the interior of the finished piece.
ROOTED IN TUSCAN VEGETABLE TANNING
Conceria Walpier is based in Tuscany and belongs to the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium, an organization that preserves and regulates the production of vegetable-tanned leather made in the region.
This tradition produces leather valued not for remaining unchanged, but for the way it matures. Colour deepens, the surface gains lustre, and signs of handling gradually become part of the material’s character.
THE STRUCTURE BENEATH THE SURFACE
In many Layers of LeRoi pieces, Walpier leather works quietly beneath a softer exterior. Its firm temper helps pockets maintain their intended shape, supports folded edges, and gives larger panels a stable foundation.
This structural role is especially important when working with supple exterior leathers such as Perlinger Alpin Calf. One leather provides touch and movement; the other provides clarity and support.
PATINA WITH PURPOSE
Vegetable-tanned leather responds visibly to light, handling, and time. Its tone may gradually become warmer, while the surface develops a richer and more individual patina.
For an interior leather, this ageing is particularly meaningful. The material does not simply sit behind the exterior as a lining. It matures alongside the rest of the piece and records its own part of the object’s history.
AT THE WORKBENCH
Walpier’s firm body gives us control when cutting, skiving, folding, and assembling structural components. It allows internal panels and pockets to be built with clean proportions while maintaining the support required by the design.
Its role may be quiet, but the precision of the completed piece depends upon it.
BUTTERO, VACCHETTA, AND PRECISE NAMING
Conceria Walpier produces more than one vegetable-tanned leather article. Buttero is a specific Walpier leather, while vacchetta is a broader description often used for vegetable-tanned calf or bovine leather.
Where Buttero is used, we identify it specifically. Where another Walpier article is selected, the product description should reflect that material accurately. These names should not be treated as interchangeable, even when the leathers share a Tuscan vegetable-tanned tradition.

We use Walpier leather for interior panels, pockets, reinforcement, and structured details where firmness and longevity are essential. Its smooth surface and natural warmth complement rather than compete with the exterior leather.
